On The Way To The Checkout

He opens the door and instantly looks over at the big stack of coolers. “Well, I really only came in for the bundle of toilet paper, but I can always use an extra cooler down at the games”. He reasoned as he slowly added it to the cart. A little miniature sphere rose up from behind the stack and began to follow him.

Filled with a little dopamine, his head was now on a swivel for the next shiny thing.

“ooooo a bag of candy, ooooo a soda, ooooo I need a new backpack for my camping trip”. Eventually, other customers started staring at the mass of spheres following the man down the aisle. He looked around at each person, “Why are they all staring? Maybe I have a pen mark or a booger on my face or something.”

He arrived at the checkout, the girl staring at the huge collection of driven spheres flying behind him. “So, you decided to pick up a few extra things while shopping?” She laughed. The huge mound of items overwhelming the cart was about to fall over onto the conveyor belt.

“Can I ask you a question? Why is everyone staring at me?” He whispered.

“You have some visitors behind you, you must have disturbed their areas. They only follow people who are buying things outside of their list. “Why are they so little?!” He asked, genuinely curious.

“This must be your first visit.” She said.

“Yes, it is”

“Oh! Well then… welcome to another level of the multiverse. The store is a universe; the planets revolve around the 5-dollar DVD bin in the center. The universe survives off the high people get when they buy something impulsively. The more energy created, the more the planets and their inhabitants are drawn to the source. They kind of hit the jackpot with you”, she said jokingly.

“How do I get rid of them from behind me?”

“Just make your boring old purchase and they’ll become disinterested in you”, she explained.

He reluctantly handed all the stuff back and purchased his bundle of toilet paper, they each broke off and flew back to where they came.

The lady wished him a nice day and he disappeared through the door.
