The Safety Pin Creature

Updated: Jul 25

He arrived at the hotel, always arriving a day early to get acclimated to his surroundings.

Monday arrived quicker than expected. As he was leaving, he checked the stove to make sure it's off and set the laundry in the designated spot.

He returned to find her laundry beautifully folded in a neat pile on the bed.

He went to put it away and noticed a small safety pin attached to his sock. "Why, what does this mean?" he thought, slightly paranoid from being in a new town.

He wore it like usual, nothing occurred out of the ordinary.

A few days later, he woke up with a rash all over his body, with bumps that were green and full of pus. His skin was slightly paler than usual. He went to the doctor, and they ran a bunch of tests; all of them came back normal.

He went back to the hotel room and put some Benadryl and cortisone on it, hoping it would bring him relief, but nothing happened immediately. He tried to sleep through the night with little luck. He woke up the next day, and his hair grew longer, turned dark red, and he heard giggling from his scalp. He felt the top of his head and gently pushed on it, “Giggle.”

“What the…”, he pushed it again and heard multiple giggles. He took his phone and tried to see what was going on, but found nothing.

The next day his eyes had little baby wings attached to them. Little bat wings to be exact. They were green and his eyes were now dark crimson red. He went back to the doctor but they still didn’t know what was causing all this and sent him home.

“What do you mean they all came back normal?! Do you not see the way I look?!” he yelled. He walked out of the office and bumped right into a strange woman. She grabbed his arm.

“Come with me and I’ll tell you what’s happening.”

They walked down an alley to a small pancake shop where she led him straight to the back, to a door where they descended to an underground area. There were a lot of high-tech cages that held all sorts of unusual creatures.

“Hi, my name is David. I’m the overseer of this place, the doctor who runs this establishment that we brought you to, and the reason why you look the way you do is primarily a result of the experiment we’ve been working on.”

“An experiment?! Without my permission?!”, he yelled.

“Well, in our defense, hardly anyone wants to willingly take the chance to turn into a creature,” the doctor replied.

“Well yeah! Of course they wouldn’t!”, he said.

“Well, either way, you’re kind of stuck with this now. That was the point of the whole experiment - to get people in here, have them change into creatures, and test their genetics to see what it worked on,” the doctor explained.

“We’re developing a new virus and you have about two more days until you die. You’re contagious, but I’m going to give you two choices. Visit your family and get them sick and die together, or disappear before the two days without talking to them and just leaving them with questions, wondering why.”, the doctor said.

“Lock me up! Lock me up before I change my mind. I’ll disappear, it’ll be painful, but I'll disappear and they'll still be alive."

“The illness becomes very intense in the last two days. You will become unrecognizable, you will also slip into madness and either fill with rage due to the pain being too much or you’ll become overwhelmed with sadness so much that you’ll want to stop it at all costs. This will be an agonizing death and there is no other way to put it.”
